Did Pomeroy campaign ask NDSU group to take down their booth?

The Associated Press reported Thursday about a display about Rep. Earl Pomeroy at a North Dakota State University student club fair that is getting attention from both Republicans and Democrats.

Here’s part of the AP story:

The booth sponsored by NDSU College Republicans Tuesday included a cardboard cutout of Pomeroy’s face with clear PVC pipe sticking out of his mouth. Some students poured red Kool-Aid into the pipe to represent the increase in government debt because of policies allegedly supported by Pomeroy.

The North Dakota Federation of College Republicans says Pomeroy’s campaign called NDSU and asked that the group take down their booth.

Pomeroy spokesman Brenden Timpe says several Pomeroy supporters complained about the display, so the campaign asked NDSU officials to check into it.

Timpe says no one asked to have the booth removed.

And here’s the press release sent out Wednesday evening by the North Dakota Federation of College Republicans:

FARGO, N.D. – The campaign of Rep. Earl Pomeroy (D-ND) stooped to a new low Tuesday afternoon, calling North Dakota State University administrators and asking them to have members of the North Dakota State University College Republicans take down their booth during the NDSU’s annual back-to-school club fair.

Members of the College Republicans had set up a game alongside their booth showing the increase in the federal debt as a result of policies Pomeroy has supported. Students staffing the booth were approached by a university employee who told them the Pomeroy campaign had called her to ask that the students remove their display.

“Not only does Rep. Pomeroy refuse to talk about how his policies have increased the federal debt, he doesn’t want anyone else to talk about it either,” said Jeremy Douglas, who was staffing the booth earlier in the day and serves as chairman of the state College Republicans. “It’s shocking that Pomeroy’s campaign would go so far as to call the University to ask us to take down our game because he doesn’t want to talk about his record.”

Four members of NDSU College Republicans including one executive board officer were running the booth at the time when the message from Pomeroy’s campaign was conveyed.

Students volunteering at the booth were quick to point out that NDSU staff handled the situation very professionally. Nonetheless, students said they were shocked the incident had happened.

“I just can’t believe an eighteen-year Congressman feels threatened by a simple game pointing out the increase in the federal debt,” said junior Brock Schmeling, who was staffing the booth during the incident. “How telling that Pomeroy is hiding from talking about the trillions in new spending that my generation will have to pay for.”
